As a child our family had a Seal Point Siamese cat called Miss Tibbs. Miss Tibbs came from a work colleague of my mother's who was moving abroad. I had been pestering for a cat for some time. My dad and I went to see her and, of course, came home with her.
Miss Tibbs was most attached to my mother but I have been smitten with Siamese ever since. Beautiful and full of character, I would not be without one by choice. Miss Tibbs lived with my parents until she was 18 years old and after I left home, I missed her a lot.
For our first wedding anniversary in 1990, my husband and I bought a beautiful Blue Point Siamese, Hazerick Dauntless 24a, who we called 'Algie'. This picture shows him on a forest walk in the Lakes. He had an amazing character, winning over many non-catlovers, beautiful looks and it was through him that we got into showing and, ultimately, breeding, though Algie himself was a neuter.
Sadly, when he was two and a half, we discovered that he had a heart condition. After a change of diet, he was once again thriving and he enjoyed life to the full for a further two years. I think of him still and hanker after another Blue.
In 1991 we bought a Seal Tabby Point female, Adrayam Empress Lian 32/1, whom we called Mistra, to breed from. We bred three litters from Mistra including Addeiam Suilee 32/3 (a Chocolate Tabby Point), Ch Chirachai Koko 32/1 (a Seal Tabby Point like her mother), both Fistra Marcopolo daughters, and Chirachai Fraser 24b (a Chocolate Point).
Suilee also had three litters and, although Koko did very well on the showbench, she was not a good breeding queen and remained with us as a pet after neutering. Fraser didn't have the personality for showing but stayed with us anyway to keep Suilee company.
Breeding Siamese is not always an easy hobby and following a turbulent few years during which Mistra, Suilee and Koko had difficulty getting on with each other (Fraser slept with whoever was in the best spot!), we took a break from our hobby, having moved up to Aberdeenshire and didn't know if we would ever return to it. As Mistra was the prime cause of the problems--not tolerating other queens having kittens--it would have been very difficult to breed again whilst she was alive without re-homing her. Since we are firm believers that cats are pets bought for life, we didn't want to re-home her and chose to wait it out.
We lost Koko to a road traffic accident, despite living near a road which rarely had any traffic on it and really didn't go anywhere, and Mistra was as distraught as we were. We hoped Mistra and Suilee would get over their problems and settle happily in together again but it was not to be. Since we had bred Suilee ourselves, we were happy enough to re-home Suilee because it was in her best interests. Suilee went to a new home with a friend of a friend and continues to live happily with her.
In the Summer of 2002, Mistra died following a brief but brave fight against Cancer leaving us with just one cat for the first time in years, Fraser, her Chocolate Point grandson. Fraser was very lonely, and we were very conscious of a large hole in our lives. We took the decision to buy another Siamese and found Lili (Lagniappe Lily thePink 24c, a Lilac Point Siamese). Lili's breeder, Kate Ramsay, kindly agreed to let us come and see Lili even though she was just 6 weeks old, and thankfully agreed to let us have her when she was old enough. Lili came to live with us in November 2002. We all love her dearly and she is both a lovely pet and was a good breeding queen to all her kittens. Our children are especially fond of her.
Lili had her first litter of kittens on the 18th November 2003. She was a really good mum and her kittens were large, healthy and happy. It was lovely to have a litter of kittens in the house again.
Lili's first litter went to their new homes towards the end of February 2004 and continue to thrive. Sadly, her next two litters were both disasterous because of problems during and towards the end of the pregnancies - none of which were obvious until the time the kittens were due. Two kittens survived out of the four from the second litter and one survived out of three from her third litter and both births were caesarian sections. Lili was neutered after this and remains our much loved pet. It is hoped that she will help our new girl, Sophie, with her maternal duties in the future. Up-to-date information as to kittens for the future will be found on the Kitten Gallery Present page.
